Let’s talk heritage…

Chalouperie

Rowboat shops

In the 19th century the first rowboat builders settle here in St-Laurent. Remember that there was no bridge to the mainland. The rowboat shops spread toward east on the south side of the road near the shore. The wooden open boats, up to 13 meters in length, were built offering no protection to its seafarer, passengers and goods. They were used to travel on the river, namely to supply Quebec’s food markets and gather other goods on the way back. Then in the 20th century, the rowboats shorten in size. The need for smaller rowboats, 4.5meters in length, is in great demand to supply schooners and ships. Later on, they will be used for leisure activities.

Chantier

The shipyard

The St-Laurent shipyard was the most important local business, at one time. Naval activities went on between 1908 and 1967 where building and repair of schooners took place including wintering storage. First known to build sail boats, the shipyard will rapidly add schooners to its order book. The engineer department develops mechanical propulsion technology for schooners and welders are reputed for their metal reservoirs, shafts and propellers. Unfortunately the need for coasters went diminishing within time until the closure of the shipyard in 1967.
